the king of belgium sent an english explorer to congo to open a vast territory Henry .M. Stanley spent alot of time scaling the congo river creating post and making african cheifs sign treaties and king leopold trying to convince the rest ofd the european countries to recognize him as the ruler of the congo area. Leopold's rule over congo was harsh he evicted muslim trades people were treated very bad and many perished his rule his rule was so harsh he was forced to surrender congo to belgium when belgium gained control of cango it was renamed to belgium congo the would be sometime harsh but the gov't was improving somtime during the 1950's the africans of belgium congo demanded self controlcthe belgium gov't knew they would regain control so agreed to their demands and joseph kasavvbu and patric lumumba became president and prime minister.After congo's self control a power struggle began between the two leaders cheif of staff interceded and arrested lumumba after mobutu took power. In 1971 he renamed the country The Republic of Zaire and he issued a zairianization policy which allow the gov't to seize 2,000 foreign-owned business most businesses failed because of bad ownership and mobutu's economy started to fail
